Orphan Bachelors

A redesign of the prologue and first two chapters of Orphan Bachelors: a Memoir by Fae Myenne Ng, this project incorporates skills of publication layout, photography and bookbinding. When searching for a book, I wanted to find a book that not only felt personal, but also impactful to San Francisco's history. In designing this structural book, I wanted the copy to be simple, centered around the text and photography. The photos follows the experiences of the immigrants held at Angel Island's detention barracks, the "Orphan Bachelors" in San Francisco Chinatown, and my own experience walking through my father's childhood village in Toishan. These photos, along with the pull quotes and annotations, break up the structure of the text.
